One of the advantages of CBDR's experiment scheduling website is that simply posting an experiment on it is often sufficient to attract enough participants. On the other hand, advertising the scheduling website benefits all experimenters with experiments posted, so advertising the website in new populations is appreciated.
When advertising the site to potential participants, this url is most likely the most appropriate:
http://cbdr.cmu.edu/experiments although the shorter http://cbdr.cmu.edu also contains a prominent link to the sign up page.
Please keep in mind the proper etiquette for advertising when associating your experiment with the CBDR website. Here are some helpful guidelines: |
| |
► |
Unsolicited e-mails are rarely appreciated. Keep e-mail frequency to a minimum and make sure you are sending e-mails to recipients that want them. Always give recipients the option to opt out of future contact.
| |
► |
The IRB has suggestions and restrictions as to the means by which subjects are recruited. One important point is that the financial compensation for an experiment should not be unduly emphasized in advertisements. Please see the IRB questions section if you have questions.
| |
► |
When posting flyers to recruit participants, make sure that you have permission and are following postering guidelines of the relevant property owner. |

Master Participant List |
| |
| |
The Master Participant List (MPL) is another service of the CBDR which helps researchers use the information collected by the scheduling website and by other researchers to find interested participants. The list includes the names, e-mails, and some demographics of thousands of past participants, many of whom have indicated that they would like to be contacted about future chances to participate in experiments for pay. |
| |
| |
If you would like access to the MPL site, please read the Conditions of MPL use below and then send an e-mail with the subject line "MPL Site Access Request" and the following information to
cbdr-lab@andrew.cmu.edu : |
| |
► Name |
| |
► Andrew ID |
| |
► Title (RA, master's, doctoral, post-doc, faculty, etc) |
| |

Conditions of MPL Use |
| |
► |
When you contact people by mass e-mail, include a note at the bottom of the message that says something like, "You have received this e-mail message because you have expressed interest in hearing about opportunities to participate in experimental research. If you would like to be removed from this list, please update your preference here
http://cbdr.cmu.edu/experiments/remove_email.asp"
| |
► |
Limit your sending of unsolicited e-mails to a minimum. Avoid sending duplicate messages, sending messages frequently, or engaging in any other communication that could be annoying for potential participants.
| |
► |
Remember that the institutional review board must approve all experimental research with human subjects. Please get your experiments approved before you begin scheduling experimental sessions.
| |
► |
Remember that all the participants on this list have expressed interest in hearing about experiments for pay. If you don't pay them, they are unlikely to be interested in participating.
| |
► |
Please do not give the password to anyone. If someone expresses interest in it, send them to this site.
| |
► |
Please put all potential participants' emails in the bcc: field of your e-mails to protect their privacy and the use of this list of e-mails.
| |
► |
Include "cbdr-lab@andrew.cmu.edu" in any e-mails you send out. If you let this site generate the list of e-mails you send to, it will automatically include that address.

Online Participant Pool |
| |
| |
The purpose of the Online Participant Pool is to recruit and maintain a quality database of participants from around the nation and has been
designed to reduce instances of fraudulent identity and inaccurate contact information.
As a researcher you'll not only have access to a diverse participant pool, but also have the ability to view the demographic breakdown of your participants,
restrict participation based on prescreen results, and generate mailing lists targeting specific populations to recruit for your studies.
The Online Participant Pool has the potential to become an invaluable resource for survey studies.
The Online Participant Pool is set up using the Sona-Systems database management software (same as the RPP system) and is hosted at the Online Participant Pool website.
However, unlike with the RPP system researchers do not need administrator approval to post studies and there is no limit to how many sessions can be posted.
The Online Participant Pool is designed to be as open and flexible as possible.
If you're interested in posting your surveys on the CBDR Online Participant Pool, please send an email to the cbdr-lab@andrew.cmu.edu with the subject "Online Participant Pool Researcher Access" with your name and andrew ID.
The lab manager will create a researcher login for you and send instructions on using the system.
The Online Participant Pool is meant for paid studies only so make sure you have a way to compensate participants before posting your study.
Examples of common forms of payment include gift codes for Amazon sent via email or entry into a lottery for valuable items or gift cards.
